Possible Side Jobs: Real Estate Agent

I’ve been involved in real estate since my sophomore year in high school. We sold our home that year and I had my first part time job as an administrative assistant for the agent who sold (and also bought) our home. It was an interesting field, and I was fascinated from the beginning. When my mom and I would go house hunting in the Inland Empire, we went into a lot of model homes in new communities across Riverside County. It was so interesting to see the different layouts of homes and how they could or couldn’t work for families.

Being a real estate agent is a unique job. If you work for a company like Century 21 or Tarbell, you may have to come in daily. For those who get their license and work for themselves, you can work from home until it’s time to do an open house or show your client around. I’d choose the latter option, obviously, to have the freedom to work from home.

I also recently read a post on 20 Something Finance about Craigslist Power User Tips, and one of the things G.E. sold was a house! On Craigslist! I thought that was amazing! I have some access to some themes to make a nice looking site to show off my listings, and a photographer friend who can take nice pictures (even though I’m sure mine would suffice) but it’s all about getting your houses out there to get them sold. How cool is that?

Taking the California real estate exam shouldn’t be too difficult, and it’s not as expensive as I originally thought. My mom said she’d do it with me because she has a fascination for real estate as well. I know with the housing market being where it is as opposed to where it’s been, selling houses is probably difficult, but it’d be something I’d pursue part time, not full time.

What are your thoughts? Would you be a real estate agent?

Absolutely.  And if you mother is going to do it with you, why not just start a mother daughter agency!  It would give you both some added flexibility by allowing each to cover for the other when possible/needed.  Go for it!

I’ve been a real estate agent for almost 13 years now, and was originally licensed in California back in 1998, just before the up-market.

I say if you have an interest in real estate you should go for it.   The exam is not all that difficult, and you can take the required courses online at your own pace.

Should you go this route, may I make a suggestion (based on where you live).  Get involved with at least one real estate investors group.  Riverside/San Bernardino/Ontario area is a hotbed for real estate inestors right now.  Networking through inestors groups should help you get off the ground quickly.  You should be able to find them easily with a simply google search.

    Best of luck to you!
