The Storm Hits: We’re Laid Off

So the storm has hit ladies and gentlemen. And I assure you, lightening does strike twice in the same place. Hubby has officially been laid off. So we’re now both 20 and laid off. So what happens now? Well, that’s a very good question. We don’t exactly have a plan. People who really know me know much not having a plan not just bothers me but essentially freaks me out. Winging it is not something I’m good at, unless it’s public speaking. This is going to be interesting.

The Money

The California EDD office has been ridiculously stressful this week. I usually file my claims online, and if not online, via phone. Neither option was available to me this week, and I don’t have the paper form. I’ve been calling the office non-stop this week. Every time I call, there’s too many other people calling that it won’t even let me hold. So the check I usually get on Thursdays, which was yesterday, is not even in the queue.

Hubby got his regular check at midnight, which will cover the rent (we already notified our landlord we would be a little late because the paycheck schedule was a bit off in August). He’ll get paid for this past week as well. He signs up for unemployment benefits today. Either way, it’s the beginning of the month, which is when our monthly bills start rolling in, and we’re definitely going to need help this month for sure.

Jobs

My mom sent me a lot of leads for virtual positions. I’m going to look into all of them and apply for the ones I qualify for. Hubby will also be looking for work in the mean time. All the while, my quest to build an online empire will be doubled with effort, as it’s truly a life or death scenario (okay a little exaggerated). I’m going to be writing more articles, looking for more staff positions, creating more sites, and basically selling my services (that sounds awful) to anyone who may be remotely interested.

I’ll be setting hubby up with a website, a LinkedIn profile, and I’m going to teach him my skills (SEO, social media marketing, and web development). We’re going to make this a productive time, and I’m going to do my best to make sure he has as much support as he needs.

Our Marriage

This, these next few weeks, maybe months, will be a huge test of our marriage. We need to be a team. We need to work together. We have to help each other. We’re going to rely heavily on our faith, and need assistance from our family. Pride is not going to get in between us. I won’t let it. This isn’t going to be easy. It’s going to be extremely difficult. But for this part, I do have a plan.

All I ask is that you guys keep us in your thoughts and prayers. And thank you all so much for your kind words and encouragement. It’s appreciated more than you could ever know.

I feel your pain!  Put together a plan and work it.  Don’t forget networking, it may take longer, but it is the only way around all the applicants.  Good luck.

    • http://20andengaged.com Briana Myricks

We’ll be working on a plan and executing ASAP. Networking will be a huge part of it. Thanks Krant!

Sorry to hear, but sounds like you have a plan.  You still have your sense of humor, good for you!  Check focus groups and see if there are job fairs in your area.  Reconnect with old contacts, limit your spending to essentials, and keep your spirits up!

We’re definitely working on a plan, and a sense of humor will help us get through. Have to laugh to keep from crying, right? I’ll definitely include your tips in our plan. Thank you!

I’m really sorry to hear about your husband losing his job. I saw it as a good thing when it happened to you because you can then focus more time on building up your online empire. It’s good to see that you plan to teach him all the things you know about online businesses – he may get hooked and become very successful in a short period of time.

Either way, I will be praying for you!

Thanks so much! We see it as a blessing in disguise. We’ll use this time to regroup and rebuild.

Good luck with everything! I am so sorry to hear that both of you have been laid off. This happened to me and my husband (then boyfriend) in 2008; within 2 weeks of one another! The good news for us is that it was the push we needed to apply for jobs in the same area as one another (we had never lived in the same state as one another). I changed my career path, and started frugal confessions. I now love both! I hope this tough path leads you both closer to what you are meant to be doing as well.

Thanks so much. I couldn’t imagine it happening within 2 weeks of each other. We’ll be working on regrouping and getting things together.

I’m so sorry that both of you are now laid off. I can’t imagine what that’s like but I’d be freakin’ out. Good luck with figuring things out.

I’m really sorry to hear about the second layoff Briana.

It’s tough out there, but there are always opportunities for people with talent and ambition.  I hope you guys spot those openings and make the best of them.

Have you tried temping as well?  I know, the whole world is doing it.

    • http://20andengaged.com Briana Myricks

Yup I reached out to several agencies and heard nothing back that was worth it (either really far or not enough compensation).

That’s so crazy… I don’t know what my husband and I would do if that happened to us at the same time…

We can get by on one income, and if i’m laid off we have an emergency fund and his income… but I couldn’t imagine going through a double lay off right after getting married…

My sympathies go out to you both

    • http://20andengaged.com Briana Myricks

Thanks; we’re making it work out and we’re positive it’s temporary.
